We recently came across an article titled “Staying Home, Many Boomers to Stay Put in Retirement” and it really got us thinking… The article spoke mostly about a 2011 poll taken from a popular 40+ website, LifeGoesStrong.com, about what, where, and why boomers will do upon retirement. Over 50% are unlikely to move away from their current town, and 4 in 10 say they’ll stay in their current home. However, most of this was due to an uncertain economy and the fact that homes are often seen as a problem, rather than an asset. Out of the 77 million people born between 1946 and 1964, only 9% think they’ll live comfortably after retirement.
What a dismal view of the future! A scary reality for many of us, but a reason to try and see how we here in Diamondhead have it a lot better than most of the country…
First of all, Arkansas is one of the most low-cost, low-tax states in the nation. It exempts Social Security benefits and up to $6,000 of retirement income from its state income tax. All other income is taxed on a sliding scale ranging from 1% to 7% and our real estate taxes are among the lowest in the nation!
The same poll asked, if retiree’s were to move, where would they want to move to and why…
4 in 10 would prefer a smaller home
- Diamondhead’s average home size is approx 2,000 sq feet.
30% prefer a warmer climate
- Diamondhead enjoys 4 distinct seasons with mild temperatures
25% want a more affordable home
And the other requirements include lower taxes, closer to family, close to medical care and shops, and no stairs… We have 4 Hospitals within 15 miles of us, are centrally located, and most of our homes are stair free!
Everyone’s waiting on things to get better, but we have it pretty good where we are. :)
Diamondhead is so convenient to everything. It's only a few minutes to work and yet, when I get home, I feel like I'm in a different world. I can be golfing or on the lake in 2 minutes. And best of all, you don't have to be wealthy to live here. It's truly affordable...even for a teacher.
